Welcome to the Dominion Soccer Academy! Here at Old Dominion University we are proud of our accomplishments on the soccer field and off.  We have worked hard for our success and pride ourselves in playing attractive and exciting soccer. Here are some of our accomplishments over the last ten years.

Alan Dawson
Head Coach

Alan Dawson concluded his 20th season at the helm of the ODU men's soccer program in 2016.

​The winningest coach in Old Dominion University soccer history and the NCAA's 13th winningest active coach by percentage (.689), Alan Dawson is a four-time Coach of the Year who has guided the Monarchs for 20 seasons producing nine All-Americans, four MLS players and led ODU to NCAA Tournaments in five straight and 11 of the lasts 13 years (This includes two top 16 seeds).

Tennant McVea
Assistant Coach

Tennant McVea returns to the Monarch coaching staff for the 2017 season after spending the 2016 season as an assistant coach with Elon University and the Phoenix men's soccer program. While at Elon, McVea helped the Phoenix to a 7-6-4 record 3-2-3 in the CAA and coached Elijah Agu to an NSCAA All-Region Second-Team nod.

McVea served as an assistant for three years at ODU, helping lead the Monarchs to two NCAA appearances and a Conference USA Championship in 2014. In 2013, McVea served as a volunteer assistant coach, before being promoted to assistant coach in 2014.

​Before beginning his coaching tenure, McVea excelled on the pitch. He was captain for the Norfolk Sharx of the MISL in 2012 and, in 2010-11, he served as club captain for FC Lahti, a professional team in Finland. 

McVea played his college ball at Loyola University Maryland, where he was a 2008 NSCAA First Team All-American and a three-time NSCAA Regional All-American.  In 2009, he was a finalist for the Lowe's Senior Class Award.  

He graduated from Loyola with a degree in advertising and public relations and a minor in general business in 2009.

William Yomby
Assistant Coach

​William Yomby joined the Monarch coaching staff in July 2018. He helped ODU to a second place finish in the C-USA with a 6-2-0 mark in league play in his first year at ODU. 

He returns to his alma mater where he made 48 starts and earned Second Team All-CAA, CAA All-Tournament Team, and an All-State honors. Following his time playing collegiately for ODU, the Kansas City Wizards made Yomby the 23rd overall pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. He then played in the United Soccer League (USL) when he transferred to the Puerto Rico Islanders later in 2008. In 2009, Yomby signed on with the USL Second Division Richmond Kickers and has been with the club since. The defender has been a six-time All-League First Team defender. Contributed to over 80 shutouts in the nine seasons he has played with the team.

"We welcome Yomby back to his alma mater," Dawson said. "He was a big part of some of our most successful men’s soccer teams and has went on to have a stellar professional career. He has a lot of experience to lean on as he begins his coaching career and our players will benefit first hand from his wealth of knowledge. He is excited to return to his Monarch soccer family and we are fortunate to have him as a part of our coaching staff."

Yomby has spent the last five seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at VCU.

Nathan Jones
Assistant Coach/Goalkeeper Coach

Jones comes to ODU by the way of Tiffin University. In his three year stint at Tiffin, Jones helped Dragons to the 2018 Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament titles and the 2019 conference tournament title.

​Jones, a native of Flintshire, Wales, played four seasons as a starting goalkeeper for the Urbana University men's soccer team. Jones, a two-year captain, earned first-team All-Mountain East Conference honors as a freshman, junior and senior and was named Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2016. He also was a first-team NSCAA All-Atlantic Region choice in 2015 and 2016, and landed on the second team in 2013.
 
Growing up in Wales, Jones played in the youth system at Tranmere Rovers FC, an English third-division team, for seven years until the U18 level.
Jones has played one season in the Premier Development League for the Dayton Dutch Lions and was also an assistant coach for the WPSL Dutch Lions team who reached the National Quarterfinals.

He graduated from Urbana with a degree in Sports Management in 2016 and a M.B.A in Sports Management and Leadership in 2019
